Galette des Rois – King’s Cake

Galette des Rois in Bangkok

Traditional French Galette des Rois in Bangkok

Savour our special Galette des Rois, a renowned French puff pastry filled with “frangipane cream” made from sweet almonds, butter, eggs and sugar.

This cake is traditionally served on the first Sunday of January in honour of Epiphany, the Christian festival that celebrates the arrival of the three wise men with gifts for the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.

In the 18th century, a fève or small porcelain figurine representing the nativity and characters from the crib was put inside the cake for good luck. Nowadays, traditional fèves are highly sought-after by collectors.

To celebrate festival, Chef Jeremy has brought small Emaux de Longwy porcelains from France. In keeping with tradition, the youngest child goes under the table and points out guests, who are then given a slice of cake. The person who receives the piece of cake with the porcelain figure inside is crowned king or queen for the day.

The delicious cake is served at L’Appart and Voila! and available for takeaway from Le Macaron at THB 750 ++, from 3rd to 26th January 2016
