The solo photography exhibition is a showcase for the work of talented Thai–Indian artist, Rammy Narula. Rammy is a Bangkok-based photographer with a deep passion for travelling and exploring the streets. His work covers personal projects, portraits, and photography resulting from countless hours roaming the streets of the cities he visits. His most recent work, Platform 10, a project shot on a single platform at the Hua Lamphong Train Station in Bangkok, has been published as a photo book with Peanut Press, a publishing house in New York.

In 2013 he exhibited his first Hua Lamphong Train Station series, a black and white project of the same train station he worked on in 2015 for “Platform 10”. In 2014 he exhibited “Life is an Act”, a project consisting of candid street photographs taken on his travels.

Platform 10 is the culmination of Rammy’s work at Hua Lamphong, Bangkok Central Train Station. He went there the first time in 2012 and his early pictures of people at the station were made in black and white. That work became an exhibition in 2013. He switched to colour photography in 2014 and kept going back trying to take pictures of the station with a fresh idea.

After over a year without a real breakthrough it was very much by chance that on a random day in 2015 he found himself on a quiet platform at the far end of the station when a short train came in, made a 20-minute stop, and got going on its way. He discovered that the photographs he took that day had a very different feel to his previous work and it was the spark that he had been looking for. He kept going back every day for the next six months to photograph that window of time on the same platform.

“Life moves very quickly and a lot can happen when you’re not looking. Hua Lamphong train station, renowned for being very slow-paced, wakes into life each time a train makes a short stop. Passengers move,” says Rammy Narula. “Train officials ushering them on. Custodians begin their maintenance work. Supplies get loaded. All of it begins and ends almost just as soon as it starts. As an observer, the feeling it evokes when everything happens at the same time in that way feels oddly harmonious. Like watching an orchestra performing without a conductor, I set out to take pictures in this small window of time on a single platform. A platform blessed with atmospheric mood found when a short three cabin train makes its daily short 20-minute stop. I focused on the isolated moments. The little pauses while everything was in motion. The stillness of the different characters connected with me and they became my muse. What was everyone thinking, I often wondered. They say life’s a journey and through the people on Platform 10, I believe I made mine.”

At the opening night of the exhibition, the lobby recreated the atmosphere of Hua Lampong station. Guests enjoyed a welcome drink inspired by flavors of Thailand and light Thai street food canapés. Background music complemented the artistic ambience. Art lovers and VIPs then were invited to a new photo book launching and signing of ‘Platfrom 10’ by Rammy Narula, followed by a viewing of his works in S Gallery.

The photo book was available at THB 1,500 net and a special limited edition book numbered 001 – 100 was avilable at THB 5,500 net including a print photograph of the signature image from the exhibition signed by the artist.

Mr. William Haandrikman, General Manager of Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, said recently, “Rammy has a passion for street photography. He enjoys walking and making new discoveries everywhere he goes. People and their interactions with their environment interest him. He’s always looking for situations and scenes that he can respond to visually and emotionally and he takes candid photographs in the most harmonious way possible. It is a great pleasure to showcase Rammy’s orignal work and to welcome a receptive art loving audience to another unique exhibition at S Gallery.”

Rammy’s unique photography art exhibition will be on show at S Gallery until 14 February 2017.

L’Appart, the renowned Parisian-styled rooftop restaurant and bar at Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, is delighted to be participating in Goût de France 2017.

For the third consecutive year, the international gastronomic event, Goût de France or Good France, will bring together more than 2,000 chefs on five continents to celebrate French cuisine. This year, the event will be held on 21 March, the first day of spring. Goût de France or Good France was initiated by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and Chef Alain Ducasse as a celebration of French gastronomy and the art of living. Organized in the form of a dinner, it will honor the excellence of French cuisine, its capacity for innovation, and the values that it conveys: sharing, enjoyment, and respect for our peers, the planet, and the art of eating well.

In the words of Alain Ducasse, “French cuisine is the interpreter of a cuisine that has evolved towards lightness in harmony with its environment… The common point of Goût de France is generosity, sharing, and the love of what is beautiful and tastes good. It is a delightful interlude and an opportunity to celebrate French cuisine worldwide.”

At the stylish rooftop bar and restaurant, L’Appart, Chef Jérome Deconinck will embrace the philosophy of Goût de France 2017 with an exceptional menu of modern French cooking. Share in mouth-watering cuisine, unique cocktails and great wines while enjoying one the best views of the Bangkok skyline.

Our gifted French chef began his extraordinary culinary journey as apprentice to Michelin star chef, Georges Paccard at his restaurant, La Ciboulette in Annecy, France. Jerome was awarded “Best Apprentice of Haute Savoie 1996”, and selected for the “Best Apprentice in France” contest.

Chef Jérome went on to work as Chef de Partie in the Department of the French Prime Minister where he created the daily menus for the prime minister and his cabinet. The talented chef was also co-owner and Chef de Cuisine of the restaurant Fancy Feats in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The venue was voted one of the city’s top ten restaurants by Malaysian Tatler, and Chef Jérome won the “Award of Excellence for the Most Outstanding Festival Cuisine” during the Kuala Lumpur Gourmet Festival. The brilliant young chef’s impressive pedigree also includes a position as Chef de Cuisine at Le Pergolese at the Hilton Tokyo, sister restaurant of Meilleur Ouvrier de France Stephane Gaborieau’s one Michelin star restaurant in Paris.

With his remarkable knowledge of traditional French techniques and many years’ experience as an expatriate, Chef Jérome brings passion and a new vision to the tables of L’Appart.

Seated in the sophisticated surroundings of the Parisian-styled apartment of L’Appart, diners will enjoy a sublime 5-course set menu which will begin with a welcome dish of gougère with aged Comte cheese, followed by truffled vegetable macedoine with a lobster medallion.

Diners will also be served a choice of spring lamb navarin with rosemary jus or Britany cotriade with seabass and mussels, followed by mini blue cheese soufflé, and a tropical savarin with pina colada espuma.

Enjoy an intimate 5-course Goût de France Dinner for only THB 1,990++ per person.

Celebrate Goût de France 2017 with Chef Jérome at L’Appart and enjoy an unforgettable evening of traditional French gastronomy infused with modern creativity.

On Tuesday 21 March 2017 from 5pm – 10pm, S Gallery at Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit opens the much anticipated art exhibition, Val 1967 – 2016, a retrospective of the late French artist and Bangkok residence, Valérie Goutard.

Born in France in 1967, Valérie Goutard, known simply as Val, grew up in South America, Africa, and Europe.  She first came upon sculpture in 2001 and, up until her passing in 2016, had followed her inner journey, immersing herself in observations of nature and listening to her intuition.

In 2004, Val established her workshop in Bangkok, where she worked surrounded by her team, who assisted her in creating her sculptures. Over the years, these took on monumental proportions. Her works are held in permanent collections in Thailand, and have been widely exhibited across Asia from Hong Kong to Singapore, Shanghai to Taiwan. Her noted participation at the Shanghai Art Fair in 2010, together with the unveiling of a huge sculpture named Urban Life as part of the Jing’An International Sculpture Project, established Val’s reputation amongst renowned sculptors.

Val was often commissioned to create her large-scale artworks for public and private settings. These included Inle Balance III and Urban Gathering for the Sofitel in Bangkok, Waiting III which was installed in Taipei New Times Square in 2014, and more recently in 2015, Inéquilibre, which is  on display in the highest residential tower in Singapore.

Amongst numerous other high profile projects, Val was also invited by the glass masters of ARS Murano to work with them in their studio on new glass creations. After several journeys in Venice,     she married glass, bronze and light to create a collection of unique pieces titled Tenth Eonian Initiative.

In 2015, Val was honored with the Trophée des Français de l’Etranger, the Trophy of French Expatriates in the Art of Living category, rewarding her work and her singular life abroad.

>In October 2016, Val passed away in a tragic road accident in Thailand.  A few days before, she had just finished a 36-metre sculpture for a private collector in Taiwan.

Val’s work has been seen all over Asia and Europe and has enjoyed great critical acclaim. Val 1967 – 2016 at S Gallery is a chance to view 17 pieces of artwork by the gifted French artist.

At the opening night of the exhibition, the centre of the lobby will feature one of Val’s most important sculptures. Sixteen other artworks will be displayed throughout S Gallery. Guests will be welcomed with an art cocktail and light canapés while our DJ creates a special ambience. Art lovers and VIPs will then be invited to view Val’s works in  S Gallery.

Mr. William Haandrikman, General Manager of Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, said recently, “It is with both joy and sadness that we present the exhibition, Val 1967 – 2016. This incredible collection of art is a celebration of Valérie Goutard’s life and her unique creative vision. What is evident in each of the 17 pieces of her work on display at S Gallery is Val’s enormous and undeniable talent, her curiosity and her artistic vision. Val was a truly great French artist who made Bangkok her home and embraced l’art de vivre in its truest sense. Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit is proud to be able to host this fabulous exhibition and share her work with you.”

Val 1967 – 2016 will be on show at S Gallery from 21 March – 21 May 2017.

L'Appart Wins International Wine Spectator Award of Execellence 2016

Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit is delighted to announce that L’Appart, its elegant rooftop bar and restaurant, has been awarded the prestigious “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2016”. This is the fourth consecutive year that the restaurant has won the award.

Acknowledged as one of the most important accolades within the hospitality industry, the international “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence” is seldom won by restaurant in a country where the wine culture is still maturing. Wine Spectator is a highly respected American magazine that specializes in tasting notes, industry news and wine-personality profiles by some of the most respected and knowledgeable wine experts.

L’Appart’s success is attributed to the introduction in June 2012 of a unique concept, “Voyage du Vin” that allows lovers of fine wines and French-inspired cuisine to discover fine wines chosen by our knowledgeable wine advisor, Rémi Prim. Thanks to a partnership between Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit and Bangkok’s five leading wine merchants including Diageo, IWS, Italasia, Italthai and Wine DD, diners at L’Appart enjoy an extensive selection of wines at reasonable prices, each complementing the cuisine of Chef Jerome Deconninck.

L’Appart won the award for “Wine by the Glass” in the “Wine List of the Year Thailand Awards 2013”, and also won the “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence” in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Sofitel’s “Voyage du Vin” concept takes wine lovers on a journey through the world of wine. The leading luxury hotel presents a unique collection wines, each the perfect example of its region. Wines include the traditional excellence of the Old World and the inventive vigour of the New World.

Mr.William Haandrikman, General Manager of Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, said recently, “My team and I are delighted that L’Appart has been awarded the “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2016.”  To win for the fourth consecutive year is an outstanding achievement and testament to the passion and dedication of the entire team at L’Appart. Over the past year at L’Appart, Chef Jerome has delighted diners with an extraordinary new menu, hosted special gourmet evenings to compliment French wines at ‘Sofitel Wine Days’ events, and worked alongside guest Michelin star chefs such as Patrick Jeffroy and Herve Rodriquez. L’Appart’s menu and our sommelier selection of wines  of the world make it a truly exceptional destination for lovers of gourmet cuisine and fine wines.

L’Appart’s numerous accolades include ‘Thailand Tatler Best Restaurants Awards’ for four consecutive years from 2013 – 2016, TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” winner for three consecutive years from 2014 -2016, the coveted “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence from 2013 – 2016, and many more.
